The Grand Hotel, a grand revival

“see you at the GH”

The Grand Hotel in Atherton is embarking on an exciting new chapter under the upcoming change in ownership to EJ’s Hospitality Group. After more than 30 years under the stewardship of local business identity Tom Draper, this historic establishment is set to undergo a significant transformation, ensuring its place as a beloved hub for the community once again.

EJ’s Hospitality Group, a family-owned business with deep roots in the hospitality industry since the 1960s, is spearheading the refurbishment. Director John Williams, whose family has successfully owned and managed hotels across Australia—including in Perth, Glenn Innes, Kandos, Prospect, Sydney, the New South Wales Central Coast, Port Macquarie, Graman, and Inverell—is leading the charge to restore the Grand Hotel to its former glory.

Over the next 12 months, the hotel will undergo a phased transformation. This includes the revitalization of the main bar, lounge bar, drive-in bottle shop and cafe, and all-day dining, all designed to create a warm and welcoming space for locals and visitors alike.

The refurbishment includes the expansion of the existing backpacker accommodation to provide more beds for working visa holders that support our farmers and horticulturalists get their produce to market, which will be continued to be managed by Andre Perry who has been carefully managing the accommodation and the guest experience, now for almost two years during his current tenture.

Sustainability is at the heart of this project. With valuable input from the local community, the refurbishment will integrate eco-friendly initiatives, including solar power, battery storage, greywater recycling, and energy-efficient lighting and appliances, all aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.

“Our goal is to give the Grand Hotel back to the community,” says John Williams. “A true pub belongs to the people—it’s the heart of the town. We’re simply the custodians, ensuring it continues to be a welcoming space for generations to come.”

In addition to the upgraded amenities, guests will enjoy an enhanced dining experience with all-day food service, daily specials, and an array of promotions. A new Grand Loyalty Program will be introduced, offering genuine savings and incentives without gimmicks, ensuring that every visit to the hotel is rewarding.

“The next 12 months will be an exciting journey for all of us,” adds Bligh Williams, who is leading the refurbishment’s design and customer experience initiatives. “We look forward to making the Grand Hotel truly grand again.”

EJ’s Hospitality Group invites the community to be part of this transformation, celebrating eac milestone as the Grand Hotel reclaims its place at the heart of Atherton.
